Small para on what is it
Medusa is a threshold network that is managed by an onchain contract. In other words, Medusa is a third party that posseses private key material known by none ! Any dapp can request Medusa to perform operations such as as decryption, signing etc, and get the result back for onchain consumption.
Small para on use cases
The first use case of Medusa is programmatic access control: Alice encrypt a message to Medusa, and later one, anyone that satisfies the conditions written in a smart contract (holder of this NFT, stake X amount etc) can get back an encrypted message that only him can decrypt.
Small para on technology
The technology Medusa is using is based on threshold cryptography which a fantastic technique to decentralize any cryptographic operations. The secret key is shared between multiple participants and no one knows it. This allows to encrypt a message towards Medusa without no one being able to reveal it. Medusa then re-encrypts this message to a specific recipient dictacted by onchain events. The proof that provides cryptographic guarantees for the ciphertext and reecnryption is based on scientific research done at EPFL,see the Calypso paper.
